Turquoise and Ottesons
Royston is a turquoise mine located near Tonepah, Nevada. The Royston District is made up of a variety of mines including Royston, Bunker Hill. Royal Blue, and Oscar Wehrend. These are some of the oldest and most productive mines in Nevada.
The mines
were located in this borough as early as 1902 by Lynn Ottesons. Partnered with
a friend, he started mining the Royston for turquoise but got betrayed. In
1960, Lynn moved to Tonopah with his family and Ottesons family has controlled
over the district ever since. For three generations, they have processed and
produced some high-quality turquoise in the industry.
Types of Turquoise:
1. Black hills Turquoise
From

2. Crazy Horse Turquoise
Mined from

4. Easter Blue Turquoise
Originally
called “Clover Blue Gems”, it is one of the oldest turquoise, it has been mined
by many old miners like Lee f. Hand and Lynn Otteson. It was discovered in the early
1900s but after a while, its mining was paused for almost 20 years and it was
resumed in the winters of 2018.
Easter Blue
produces high-quality turquoise with a thick matrix varying from dark brown to
gold in hue, often blue to black green and sometimes two-toned.
5. Miller Mountain Variscite
Famous for
its spider web pattern and vibrant color ranges, it was rediscovered in 2012 by
Danny Otteson. It is present in Columbus Mining District.
6. Montezuma Turquoise
Both
Royston turquoise and Montezuma Turquoise, are mined from the same Royston
mining range. This range abundantly produces high-grade blue-green turquoise
with a heavy matrix ranging from dark brown to gold in color.
7. Thunderbird Turquoise
It is named thunderbird
because of the bright light of the blue turquoise color from this mine. Its
former claimers were Longcar and Moppin.
8. Starfox Variscite
These were
discovered from Monte Cristo mining district in 2016, they are known for its
stunning grey micro web texture.
9. Zeus Variscite
It is known
for the stunning spider web of dark blue and spotted Zeus nuggets. It was
discovered by Lane Otteson in 2015 from the Monte Cristo mining district.
The Royston turquoise mined here is known worldwide for its beautiful
