Private Cloud vs. Public Cloud: What's the Difference?

If you operate your business, you must have come across words such as 'Cloud,' 'Private Cloud,' or 'Public Cloud.' Being the CEO, it's not compulsory that you may know the meaning of all these fancy words.

There are CTOs in the company, who take care of all the technicalities of the business. However, knowledge will only benefit you. Let me clear some ambiguities of these three words. Follow me!

What is the Cloud?

The servers which are accessible over the internet are known as clouds; they also provide services such as software and data warehouses. With the use of Cloud, companies don't need to manage the physical servers themselves or having software to run on their machines. All are performed by using the Cloud.

Now that we have fully understood the crux of Cloud, we can start with different kinds of Cloud, i.e., private Cloud and Public Cloud.

What is Public Cloud?

The hosting solutions, which are public, rely on third party providers for the software and hardware. The Hosting service providers are responsible for managing maintenance security and deployment. Some of the most famous public clouds include AWS and Microsoft Azure.

Public Cloud vs Private Cloud

Cloud service offers a world of utility for the businesses to opt for them, and they provide ease in rapid deployment and testing. There are many companies who subscribe to cloud services when they need it and opt out when they don't. It's as easy as that.

One of the shortcomings of the public cloud is that you have no control over the platform. The platform is managed by a third party, with you having little or no control over the blueprints of the software.

What is a Private Cloud?

As the name suggests, the private Cloud is hosted by a company and its their personal Cloud. The data center and services are protected by company's firewall.

The companies who use a private cloud have greater control over the resources and who can use them. The software, hardware, configuration, and security all are controlled by the company. When a company knows that its own members use the service and  no one else, it can be more inclusive with its employees.

All this control also has its downsides, as the company needs to be vigilant of the hackers. Tt has added responsibility on the It team to provide safe and secure services at all times. In addition, the license of the software will need to be upgraded, which adds an overhead cost.

The Ideal Type for Your Business

The companies that are starting out and have small scale businesses should opt for the public Cloud. The reason being is it's easier to adapt to it and lets you have more resources. You will not need to take care of security and can work freely while enjoying the services.

The companies that have a more established business and can afford an IT team to take care of security should go for private cloud. It is simply because its fully controlled data cloud and will ease the mind of the company officials. They can invest more time in other productive activities.
